Matteo Milleri Transforms Electronic Music Through Anyma

Few artists have managed to bridge the gap between traditional dance music and cutting-edge digital art quite like Matteo Milleri. Under his Anyma artist name, the Italian-American producer and DJ has quietly but definitively shaped the contemporary electronic music scene, though you might not know it from his understated demeanor.

Born in New York City and raised under the warm Italian sun, Milleri’s path to electronic music stardom wasn’t exactly straightforward. The son of EssilorLuxottica CEO Francesco Milleri, he initially walked the well-worn path toward economics, perhaps following in his father’s footsteps. But sometimes life has other plans. A pivotal decision to study sound engineering at Milan’s SAE Institute in 2008 would prove to be the catalyst for everything that followed.

It was during his time at SAE that Milleri met Carmine Conte, a chance encounter that would reshape both their futures. Together, they formed Tale of Us, a partnership that would go on to redefine melodic techno. Following their creative instincts, the duo made the bold move to Berlin, immersing themselves in the city’s legendary electronic music scene. By 2016, they had established Afterlife Records, a label that would become synonymous with forward-thinking electronic music.

But Anyma represented something entirely different. Launched in 2021, this solo project marked a fascinating departure from conventional electronic music. The project debuted with the EP “Claire” on Rose Avenue Records, featuring collaborations with Janus Rasmussen and Delhia de France. What set this release apart wasn’t just its sound – it was accompanied by what was heralded as the world’s first full-size NFT music video, a groundbreaking collaboration with Berlin-based artist Marigoldff and IOR50 Studio.

Barely catching his breath, Anyma released a second EP, “Sentient“, through Afterlife Records just weeks later. The release showcased a darker, more experimental side to Milleri’s artistry, hinting at the depths yet to be explored. His creative momentum continued to build, culminating in the August 2023 release of “Genesys,” Anyma’s debut full-length album. The 14-track record brought together an impressive roster of collaborators, including Grimes, Sevdaliza, CamelPhat, Chris Avantgarde, Rebuke, and Cassian, each adding their unique touch to the sonic canvas.

What sets Anyma apart isn’t just the music – it’s Milleri’s holistic approach to artistry. His live performances are meticulously crafted experiences that blur the line between concert and digital art installation. Drawing from a rich palette of melodic house, techno, ambient, and classical influences, these shows create immersive landscapes where sound and visuals dance in perfect harmony.

Beyond the DJ booth, Milleri has proven himself as a multifaceted creative force. His work has extended to visual creative direction for The Weeknd and a notable collaboration with Bulgari Studio, the luxury brand’s creative platform. Through Anyma, his ventures into the NFT space further demonstrate his commitment to pushing the boundaries of what electronic music can be in the digital age.

In his personal life, Milleri has experienced both the spotlight and its shadows. His romantic seaside wedding to Italian supermodel Vittoria Ceretti in Ibiza (January 2020) captured headlines, as did their subsequent separation announced in June 2023. More recently, March 2024 saw him linked to musician Grimes, with whom he had previously collaborated on “Welcome to the Opera,” a track they memorably performed together at Tomorrowland in July 2023.

Now at 36, Milleri continues to chart new territory through Anyma. Following the success of “Genesys,” he released “Genesys II” a year later, further expanding his artistic vocabulary. His work consistently challenges the conventional boundaries between sound and visual art, between the physical and the digital, between performance and experience.

Through it all, Milleri maintains a refreshing focus on artistic innovation rather than personal publicity. Whether performing as Anyma in Berlin’s underground clubs or headlining major festivals, he lets his work speak for itself. His journey from economics student to electronic music innovator serves as a reminder that sometimes the most interesting paths are the ones we never planned to take.

As electronic music continues to evolve in increasingly complex ways, both Milleri and Anyma stand at the forefront of its next iteration. Through his various projects and collaborations, he’s not just making music – he’s helping to shape the future of digital artistry itself.
