The Percussionist’s Ear Behind D$AVAGE’s Off-Meter Flow

Before D$AVAGE was rapping about the streets of Gonzales, Louisiana, he was keeping time. The kid grew up surrounded by music and spent his early years practicing instruments, landing on percussion. And that background shows up all over the rapper he became.

Here’s the thing about drummers: they know exactly where the beat is, which means they know how to sit behind it, push ahead of it, or land right on top of it. D$AVAGE’s flow gets described as “off the meter,” and that’s not accident or sloppiness. That’s a guy who internalized rhythm young enough to bend it on purpose, the kind of instinct you pick up from years of feeling time in your hands.

Now affiliated with Breadwinner Alumni and repping the BWA family, D$AVAGE makes raw Southern street rap with real storytelling underneath the confidence. He talks about hustling, survival, money, pain, and loyalty, the stuff he’s actually lived. Some records are built to turn you up. Others pull back the curtain on his life and mindset. He points to hometown heroes like Kevin Gates and Lil Wayne as inspiration, and you can hear that Louisiana edge in the hard production and aggressive delivery.

“Chosen One” landed July 31st and clocks in at just 90 seconds. Short, but that’s fitting for a guy whose whole thing is timing, no wasted bars, in and out before you can look away. It sits alongside “2am on Highland,” “Pain,” “So Icy,” and “Stone Cold – $avage Mix,” the run of tracks leading into “007 The Mixtape,” his debut, due soon.

His collab wishlist has exactly one name on it, and it isn’t a random big feature. It’s NBA YoungBoy, another Louisiana artist out of the same pocket of the state. For D$AVAGE that pick is personal. He knew YoungBoy back before any of this, and the honest curiosity in how he brings it up, whether YoungBoy still remembers him, tells you the appeal isn’t the co-sign. It’s two people from the same few square miles ending up on the same song.
