Rising Star Devorah Opens Up About New Album ‘I Am’
Electropop and EDM have found a compelling new voice in rising artist Devorah. With the release of her latest album, “I Am,” on September 2, 2024, this singer-songwriter is poised to captivate audiences with her unique blend of infectious beats and introspective lyrics. We sat down with Devorah to discuss her musical roots, the creative process behind “I Am,” and her vision for the future.
Let’s start at the beginning. Can you tell us about when and how you got started in music?
Oh man, it’s actually a pretty adorable story. Picture this: I’m four years old, in preschool, and it’s recess. For some reason, I got it in my head that this picnic table was my stage. So, I ended up on top of this picnic bench, suddenly feeling like a superstar. Before I knew it, I had an audience of my preschool pals, and I just went for it – belting out tunes, probably from some Saturday morning cartoon I was obsessed with back then. I’m up there, twirling and waving my arms like a tiny maestro. When I finished, I took this over-the-top bow, just like I’d seen on TV. That was my big debut, I guess. Been chasing that feeling ever since.
That IS adorable! Fast forward to today, how would you describe your music to a first-time listener?
My music is a dynamic fusion of electropop and EDM. It’s the kind of sound that gets people moving, with pulsing rhythms and catchy hooks that linger long after the track ends. The production is polished, but there’s also this raw energy that reflects my passion as a creator. Whether it’s a high-energy anthem or a more introspective piece, I aim to create music that resonates with listeners on both the dance floor and in their personal moments.
Your new album, ‘I Am,’ just dropped. What can you tell us about it?
‘I Am’ is… it’s like a journey, you know? It’s got 13 tracks, and each one is like a different stop along the way. We’re talking relationships, personal battles, moments of triumph, growth – the whole rollercoaster. I was super lucky to work with some incredible producers on this one. I had the privilege of working with some seriously talented producers. There’s ReOrder, who’s made waves in the trance scene with big names like Armada and Armin van Buuren. And then Patrick Ryan Heaney joined us, bringing his experience from projects with indie electronic acts like CHVRCHES and EDM giants like Skrillex. These guys, they really helped shape the sound, take it to places I couldn’t have imagined on my own.
Is there a particular track on the album that stands out to you?
You know, that’s like asking a parent to choose their favorite child. Each track on this album, they all have their own unique place, their own story to tell. From “Breaking Through” right through to “Hard to Love,” every single one holds a special place in my heart. It’s funny, because as I was creating them, each song felt like the most important one at that moment. Now that the album’s done, I see how they all fit together, like pieces of a puzzle. They each represent different parts of my journey, different emotions and experiences. I guess what I’m trying to say is, they’re all standouts in their own way. Each one captures a moment, a feeling, a part of me. And together, they tell the whole story of ‘I Am’. I just hope that listeners will find something in each track that resonates with them, you know?
Your music seems to come from a very personal place. Can you talk about how your life experiences have influenced your art?
Yeah, absolutely. My journey… it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. I’ve battled addiction and come out the other side. That experience, it’s woven into every note, every lyric. Music became this lifeline for me, this way to process everything and find meaning in it all. And then there’s my spiritual side – I’m a Reiki master, and that practice, it breathes life into my music, giving each track a deeper resonance and significance beyond just the melodies and rhythms. It’s like, through my music, I’m not just trying to make catchy tunes, but to channel something deeper, something healing.
What do you hope listeners take away from your music?
More than anything, I hope listeners will be able to connect with my lyrics and find comfort in them. Music has this incredible power to heal and inspire, and if my songs can provide that for even one person, I’ll feel like I’ve accomplished something meaningful.
Looking ahead, what’s next for you?
I’m excited to say that I’ll be performing at the Springboard festival in Memphis from October 16-20. It’s going to be amazing to share these new songs with a live audience. I’m also working on an EP with Patrick Ryan Heaney, which is separate from this album. And there are plans for some special edition vinyl releases in the coming months. Basically, I’ll be making music for the rest of my life, and I can’t wait to share it all with my listeners.
