Every debut album is an introduction, but Frannk Whitte took that literally. The São Paulo-born singer named his first full-length project “Who,” and he’s treating it as a question he plans to answer. He’s been making music for nearly a decade, including three formative years under the mentorship of producer and songwriter Cory Rooney. This album is where he finally puts it all together.
He’s taking his time getting there. Rather than releasing everything at once, Whitte is putting out a new track every couple of weeks, with the full album out by mid-November. He’s clear about why he’s pacing it that way. “Right now, I want everyone to really sit with the album and digest it,” he said. His most recent release, “Taste,” came out September 10. Listeners who are new to him can also find earlier songs like “I Can Finally Know,” “Grooving Without Moving” and “Night Shift” on his Spotify.
That patience makes more sense once you know how he got here. He was five when he first watched Michael Jackson videos, and he remembers Jackson feeling “like a superhero.” He got the glove and tried to dance like him. Drum lessons started at seven or eight, and by 13 he was making his own beats. The turning point came at 15. After his first breakup, he wrote and recorded a song for the first time, then sent it to friends without telling them it was him. They loved it, and that was when he knew he had to keep going.
Jackson is still the name he gives when asked about a dream collaboration, and he ties that admiration directly to Rooney. “Even though he’s not with us anymore, I feel like I caught a glimpse of his magic through my mentor,” he said.
Working between Brazil and Los Angeles, Whitte blends alternative R&B with soul and modern pop. The records are built on warm textures and subtle arrangements, and his vocal delivery is intimate and plainspoken. He isn’t interested in being filed under one genre. “What I create comes directly from where I am emotionally and personally at that time,” he said. “I’m not chasing a label or a category. I’m chasing honesty.”
He’s specific about what he wants listeners to take from it. He hopes a song sends someone “back to a night that mattered, to a person or version of themselves they hadn’t thought about in a while.” Whether that means dancing, crying or just sitting with something real, he wants the emotional connection to be undeniable.
Once “Who” is fully out, he’s planning one or two special nights in São Paulo, the city where he was born. By then, fans will have had weeks to live with the music. The album asks who Frannk Whitte is. If the rollout works the way he hopes, the crowd in São Paulo will already know part of the answer before he sings a note.
