Transcending Boundaries – An Interview with Moon and Aries
As the electronic music scene continues to grow, few artists manage to captivate audiences quite like Moon and Aries. With their new album “Transcendence” released on September 6th, we sat down with the international duo to discuss their unique sound, creative process, and the inspiration behind their latest work.
Jordana Moon, a Canadian vocalist and lyricist, and Tom Aries, a German composer and producer, have been pushing the boundaries of electronic music since their debut in 2021. Despite being separated by an ocean and a nine-hour time difference, the duo has created a harmonious blend of Electronic, Cinematic Electropop, Deep House, Trip-Hop, and RnB/Soul that has garnered attention worldwide.
Your new album “Transcendence” was just released last week. Can you tell us about the concept behind it?
Jordana: “Transcendence” is really a journey through time and consciousness. We’ve created 12 theme songs, each corresponding to a month of the year. It’s our way of exploring different facets of human experience throughout the cycle of a year.
Tom: We wanted to create a soundtrack for different situations in life. Each song stands alone but together they tell a connected story of personal growth and transformation.
How do you manage to collaborate effectively despite being in different countries?
Tom: Technology has been a game-changer for us. We share files, have video calls, and work asynchronously. It’s challenging at times, but it also allows us to bring different perspectives to our music.
Jordana: The time difference can actually be an advantage. While I’m sleeping, Tom might be working on a track, and vice versa. It creates a constant flow of creativity.
Your music is known for blending various genres. How would you describe your sound?
Jordana: We call it “Melody Meets Meaning.” We strive to create music that’s not only catchy but also carries a deeper message. Our influences range from jazz and trip-hop to neo-soul and classical electronic music.
Tom: I’d add that we’re always pushing ourselves to experiment with different sounds and textures. My background in computer game music and film soundtracks definitely influences our cinematic feel.
Can you walk us through some of the tracks on “Transcendence”?
Jordana: Sure. The album opens with “Fire Night,” which sets the tone with themes of transformation and rebirth. “Slow Motion” is a meditative pause that encourages listeners to savor life’s moments. “Traffic” uses the metaphor of navigating obstacles to explore resilience.
Tom: “A Love Revival” celebrates the power of love, while “Don’t Feed the Demons” addresses breaking free from past traumas. We close with “The Affirmation Journey,” an instrumental piece that allows for reflection on the album’s themes.
Your previous singles have been quite successful, with “FIRENIGHT” topping DJ charts and “THE ARRIVAL” gaining over a million Spotify streams. How has this success impacted your creative process for “Transcendence”?
Tom: It’s certainly encouraging, but we try not to let it dictate our direction. We’re grateful for the recognition, but our focus is always on creating music that feels authentic to us.
Jordana: Exactly. The success motivates us to keep pushing boundaries and exploring new territory in our music.
How do your individual backgrounds contribute to Moon and Aries’ unique sound?
Jordana: My background in creative writing definitely influences our lyrics. I draw inspiration from artists like Joni Mitchell, Lauryn Hill, and Portishead, which I think adds depth to our vocal melodies and themes.
Tom: And my classical piano education, combined with my love for electronic pioneers like Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk, informs our instrumental soundscapes. It’s this blend of our diverse influences that creates the Moon and Aries sound.
What do you hope listeners are taking away from “Transcendence”?
Jordana: We want to take them on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. Each track is an invitation to look beyond the ordinary and embrace transformation.
Tom: Yes, and we hope that the album serves as a soundtrack to their own personal experiences throughout the year. Whether it’s a moment of introspection or celebration, we want our music to resonate with their lives.
Finally, what’s next for Moon and Aries now that “Transcendence” has been released?
Jordana: We’re always creating, so there’s definitely more music in the pipeline. We’re also hoping to explore more visual elements to accompany our music.
Tom: And who knows, maybe we’ll finally get to meet in person and perform live together! That’s definitely a dream for the future.
As our interview concludes, it’s clear that Moon and Aries are more than just a music duo – they’re creative innovators, blending diverse influences and experiences into a unique musical journey for every listener. Their ability to create cohesive, meaningful music despite physical distance is a testament to their creativity and dedication to their craft.
“Transcendence” proves to be more than just an album; it’s an exploration of the human experience through the lens of electronic music. As Moon and Aries continue to push boundaries and challenge listeners to transcend their own limitations, they solidify their position at the forefront of the evolving music industry.
